Gospel of the Day (Lc 5,33-39) (reflection of Pope Francis)
What the Gospel brings us?
Joy and novelty.
These doctors of the law were locked in their commandments, in their prescriptions.
This law of these people was not bad: guarded but prisoners, waiting for faith to come.
That faith that would be revealed in Jesus himself.
(...) Jesus said: 'I don't come to close the law, but to bring it to its fullness'. And the fullness of the law, per esempio, they are the Beatitudes, the law of love.
And this is why the Church asks us, to all of us, to leave aside the decaying structures: they are not needed! And take new wineskins, those of the Gospel.

Gospel of the Day (Lc 5,1-11) (reflection of Pope Benedict XVI)
The evangelist shows how the first disciples followed Jesus by trusting Him, based on his Word, also accompanied by prodigious signs.
Let's observe that, before this sign, Simon addresses Jesus as "Master", while afterwards he calls him "Lord" (v. 7).
It is the pedagogy of God's call, who doesn't look much at the qualities of the chosen ones, but to their faith.
Man is not the author of his own vocation, but it gives a response to the divine proposal; and human weakness need not be scary if God calls.
We must have faith in his strength which acts precisely in our poverty;
we must trust more and more in the power of his mercy, that transforms and renews.

From the beginning, Jesus shows his predilection for people suffering in body and spirit.
It is the Father's predilection, that He embodies and manifests with works and words.
His disciples were eyewitnesses to this, they saw this and then witnessed it.
But Jesus did not want them to be just spectators of his mission: got them involved, he sent them, he also gave them the power to heal the sick and cast out demons.
And this has continued without interruption in the life of the Church, until today.
Taking care of the sick of all kinds is not an "optional activity" for the Church, no! Caring for the sick of all kinds is an integral part of the Church's mission.

Jesus not only casts demons out of people, freeing them from the worst slavery, but he prevents the demons themselves from revealing his identity.
Ed insiste su questo "segreto" because the success of his own mission is at stake, on which our salvation depends.
Jesus suffers and dies on the cross for love.
In this way, upon closer inspection, it gave meaning to our suffering, a meaning that many men and women of every era have understood and made their own, experiencing profound serenity even in the bitterness of harsh physical and moral trials.

The Evangelist tells us that the Nazarenes failed to recognize Jesus as the consecrated of the Lord.
Sisters and brothers, this event, with the necessary analogies, it happens for us today too.
And so for us he is a close Person, anzi, “too” close.
But let's try to ask ourselves: we feel the unique authority with which Jesus of Nazareth speaks?
We recognize that He is the bearer of a message of salvation (...), I feel in need of this salvation?
I feel like I'm poor in some way too, prisoner, blind, oppressed?
At that time, only then, “the year of grace” will be for me!
